Palestinian civil society organizations and the Palestinian People’s Committees called on all international parties and human rights organizations, especially the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to put pressure on the Assad regime to stop the pillage and confiscation of civilian property in the Yarmouk refugee camp in southern Damascus.
In a joint statement, the organizations and Committees condemned the widespread looting and pillage of the camp by Assad’s militias, stressing that such act was an affront to the dignity of the Palestinian people who have always called for sparing the Palestinian camps the bombardment and destruction.
The statement pointed out that the looting of civilian property in the areas that fall to the Assad regime has become a systematic policy involving the Assad army’s senior officers and loyalists.
Assad regime forces, backed by sectarian militias and Palestinian militiamen, recaptured the Yarmouk camp and the adjacent Al-Hajar al-Aswad districts following a ruthless bombing campaign forcing the local residents to agree to be evacuated to Hama province. The campaign also ended with reaching a separate deal with ISIS whereby militants of the extremist group were transferred to the Badiya desert. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
