Damascus Provincial Council Calls on UN Security Council to Stop Assad Regime’s Onslaught on Eastern Ghouta
Damascus provincial council called upon the UN Security Council to take action to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the suburb of eastern Ghouta and put an end to the Assad regime's relentless bombardment of civilians.
In a statement released on Thursday, the council said that the dozens of appeals made by people of eastern Ghouta have all fell on deaf ears as the international community has so far failed to intervene to put an end to the massacres the Assad regime is committing in the besieged area with Russian support.
The council addressed the UN Security Council which convened to discuss the worsening humanitarian situation in eastern Ghouta. "We hope that our appeals will not be ignored as was the case with the previous ones. We are sending you this message while the Russian and Assad regime’s jets are indiscriminately raining bombs over our heads.”
The council called for an end to the bombardment, protection of civilians, and the lifting of siege on eastern Ghouita. "We are not only calling for a month-long truce in eastern Ghouta, but we demand that the UN Security Council assume its responsibilities and take legal measures to put an end to the siege and massacres being committed against civilians in eastern Ghouta.”
The council underscored that the UN Security Council has an obligation to intervene to protect Syrian civilians from the crimes of genocide the Assad regime is committing against them. It noted that the Assad regime is using internationally prohibited weapons, including poisonous chlorine, cluster bombs, and incendiary napalm in the bombing of eastern Ghouta.
The Assad regime and its allies have recently stepped up aerial attacks on eastern Ghouta, the council said, describing the bombardment as hysteric and unprecedented. It said that the Assad regime has been buoyed by the inaction of the international community which has so far failed to stop Assad’s killing machine.
The intensified bombing campaign by the Assad regime has killed hundreds of civilians and displaced thousands more in recent weeks. Schools in eastern Ghouta have been suspended as the bombardment directly targets schools and health facilities. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
