Ibrahim Miro, Interim Finance Minister, warns of an imminent humanitarian and food crisis that will affect people in the liberated and besieged areas, pointing to a FAO report six million Syrians are threatened by a worsening food crisis. The report attributes the causes of the crisis to multiple reasons, particularly the sharp decline in wheat production in 2014. Miro said that “the interim government predicted this crisis at its early stages, so in June we established the General Administration for Grain which has 14 branches in four Syrian provinces. The interim government also purchases around 18,000 tons of wheat from the farmers in the liberated areas, but we faced big problems reaching out to farmers in the areas where production is greater, especially areas under the control of the Assad regime or ISSI who prohibits transferring wheat to the liberated areas. The interim government needs 323,000 tons of wheat to feed around 2.5 million Syrians in the liberated and besieged areas. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
