Two children were killed in an explosion of a landmine that was left by the Assad regime in northern rural Hama on Wednesday. It is the fourth such incident in around a month.
Local activists said the children Mousa Adel al-Sheikh and Waseem Ziad al-Sheikh were killed in an explosion of a landmine that was planted by the Assad regime forces in the town of Souran north of Hama city.
Activists pointed out that it is the fourth such incident that took place in northern Syria in the past month. Most recently, a landmine explosion has killed a woman and injured 24 other civilians in the village of Khafseen in northeastern rural Hama.
The Syrian Coalition said that the Assad regime bears primary responsibility for civilian casualties resulting from explosions of landmines and remnants of war in various parts across Syria. It pointed out that these new crimes are added to a long litany of crimes against Syrian civilians, calling on the International Criminal Court to launch serious investigations into these crimes and hold those responsible to account.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) earlier urged international donors to step up support for demining operations and awareness raising campaigns of landmines risks, adding that Syria’s neighboring countries should facilitate access to demining organizations and provide humanitarian assistance to survivors.
