Monitoring Group: 520 Palestinian-Syrians Killed Under Torture in Assad Prisons Since 2011

The number of Palestinian-Syrians who have been killed under torture in the prisons of the Assad regime since 2011 has risen to 520. The majority of the victims were from refugee camps in Damascus and its suburbs.

The Action Group for Palestinians in Syrian (AGPS) in early July said that 12 Palestinian-Syrians from the ‘returnees camp’ in Homs were killed under torture in the prisons of the Assad regime.

The London-based watchdog group pointed out that the Assad regime has detained no fewer than 16,890 Palestinian-Syrians since 2011, subjecting them to various methods of brutal torture. Human rights activists said that torture in the prisons of the Assad regime usually has ‘sectarian nature.’

On June 26, the Group and 54 human rights organizations issued a joint statement on victims of torture, calling on the international community to investigate the torture of detainees, protect the rights of Palestinian-Syrians, and hold accountable those responsible for the crime of torture in Assad’s prisons.
