SNHR Says Assad Regime Responsible for Death of Dozens of Civilians in January

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that at least 197 civilians were killed in Syria in January, mostly at the hands of the Assad regime and its allies. The Syrian Coalition reiterated calls for holding to account all those responsible for war crimes in Syria.

In a report issued on Friday, the monitoring group said that the victims included 57 children and 27 women, adding that 44 civilians were killed by the Assad regime, while nine others were killed in suspected Russian airstrikes.

President of the Syrian Coalition Abdurrahman Mustafa said that no judicial body will accept the acquittal or the rewarding of the criminals,” adding that “this is why criminals and their supporters are afraid of any international investigation into war crimes committed in Syria, including the use of chemical weapons.”

The report indicated that 37 civilians, including 15 children and 12 women, were killed in airstrikes by the international anti-ISIS coalition. It noted that the victims also included 30 people, including 13 children and three women, who were killed in attacks by the PYD militia.

The Network said that a medical worker was killed by the Assad regime while another one was killed by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham militant group in January.

According to the report, ISIS killed 13 civilians in the reporting period, including three children and one woman, adding that 64 civilians were killed by groups that the Network said were untraceable.

The victims also included 14 people were killed under torture, 11 of whom were killed by the Assad regime’s security forces and one by the PYD militia.

According to a report on civilian casualties the Network released in October, as many as 222,114 civilians have been killed in Syria since March 2011. Of those, more than 89 percent were killed by the Assad regime.

According to the Network, Assad’s forces killed at least 198,152 civilians, including 22,363 children, while Russian forces killed 6,239 civilians, including 1,804 children.

The Network called on the UN Security Council to take additional measures pursuant to the issuance of resolutions 2139 and 2254, stressing the need to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court and to hold to account all those involved in war crimes, including the Russian regime. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
