The interim Ministry of Finance and Economy said it is would continue to purchase grain through the General Establishment of Grains during the Eid holidays. The Ministry began earlier buying wheat in the rebel-held areas of Syria, a step that aims to market the production of Syrian farmers, thus supporting them to continue the cultivation of this strategic crop. It also aims to secure flour for bakeries on a permanent basis, and also to prevent the monopoly of wheat. The move will contribute to the stability of food security and save the Syrians of the risk of a possible famine according to a report of the World Food Program, and will also help increase the yield of wheat in the coming years through the provision of seeds in collaboration with the interim Ministry of Agriculture and Infrastructure. The move comes as part of the interim government’s efforts to ensure self-sufficiency, to support farmers in the liberated areas, to store wheat in specific areas, thereby reducing transportation costs and ensuring accessibility of the amounts needed for each area.
