The Association of Syrian Lawyers on Wednesday published a list of individuals and entities involved in war crimes in Syria, with Bashar al-Assad on top of the list followed by hundreds of senior army officers and officials.
The Association said that the list was compiled after examining the facts and evidence about war crimes and crimes against humanity, the genocide, the financing of terrorism, the formation of terrorist gangs and groups, and UN Security Council resolutions on Syria.
The list comprised 677 names of individuals and entities that committed war crimes and financed terrorist operations in Syria.
The names of regime officials on top of the list included those who hold senior positions in the Assad regime, as well as sectarian militia leaders, including Iranians, Iraqis and Lebanese.
The United Nations has been investigating the war crimes taking place in Syria for several years and has established the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier called for referring Syria to the International Criminal Court and hold accountable all those responsible for war crimes.
The gravest violations are being committed by the Assad regime forces and their allied Iranian militias and Russian forces. The International Commission of Inquiry earlier confirmed the involvement of the Assad regime in chemical attacks on civilians, including the Khan Sheikhoun attack. Thousands of photographs of victims of torture in the prisons of the Assad regime were also leaked. Other violations also include the bombing of cities, markets and city centers.
Head of the Commission Sergio Pinheiro earlier warned against amnesty for those responsible for gross violations of human rights and war crimes against humanity. He called for urgent measures to bring those responsible to justice. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
