Co-chair of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, Hadi Al-Bahra, and members of the Syrian Negotiations Commission met with a group of activists and researchers in the Turkish city of Gaziantep and discussed with them the results of the first meeting of the Constitutional Committee which was held in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations.
Al-Bahra gave an overview on the meeting and the events surrounding the first sessions up to the meetings of the drafting body. He talked about the Assad regime’s lack of seriousness in engaging in the work of the committee vis-à-vis the distinguished relationship with the civil society delegation which is based on serving the Syrian national interest.
Al-Bahra also talked about the file of detainees and the forcibly disappeared people as an essential issue that was raised during the meetings of the Committee. He also said that the Syrian Negotiations Commission sent a letter to the UN envoy during the meetings of the Constitutional Committee calling for the release of detainees as a confidence-building measure.
Furthermore, Al-Bahra stressed the need for discussing the other baskets in parallel with the work of the Constitutional Committee, especially the baskets of governance and elections, adding that the political process cannot be reduced to the basket of the constitution.
Al-Bahra pointed out that the Syrian Negotiations Commission asked the UN envoy to activate the basket of terrorism independently from the work of the constitutional committee.
He stressed the need for constant communication with the various components of the Syrian people to explain all the details, papers and proposals presented within the work of the Constitutional Committee. (Source: Syrian National Coalition’s Media Department)
