The Syrian National Coalition’s Department of Foreign Relations on Wednesday convened to discuss the latest developments in the work of the Constitutional Committee and the ongoing preparations for holding the first meeting of the Committee at the United Nations Office at Geneva. Joint Chairman of the Constitutional Committee, Hadi Al-Bahra, participated in the meeting.
The meeting discussed the provisions of the constitution and the visions resulting from the workshops held by representatives of the Syrian Negotiations Commission in the Constitutional Committee during its latest meeting in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
Al-Bahra said they stood ready to start the work of the Constitutional Committee, stressing that all Syrians today have the opportunity to lay the cornerstone in the dream of establishing a state that is based on justice and equality.
Al-Bahra pointed out that the Commission developed a set of important visions, especially those related to basic rights and freedoms, security and military institutions, the electoral process, and the mandate of the legislative, judicial and executive powers and ways to ensure their independence and that there is a separation of these powers.
Participants in the meeting reaffirmed the Coalition’s support for the work of the Constitutional Committee and the need to reach a political solution in accordance with the timetable set out in the relevant international resolutions, most notably the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolution 2254.
