Coalition’s Political Committee Discusses Results of Meeting with US State Department on Idlib

The Syrian National Coalition’s political committee on Thursday held its periodic meeting with the chairmanship of the Coalition’s President Anas al-Abda to discuss the results of the meeting the Coalition held with officials of the US State Department in the Turkish capital Ankara on Wednesday. The committee also discussed the results of the visits recently made by the Coalition delegations to the European Union and the United States.

Tabled for discussions were also the latest political and on the ground developments in Syria.

The Coalition’s delegation briefed members of the political committee on the meeting with the US delegation. The meeting discussed the military situation in Idlib, the atrocious crimes the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian allies are committing against innocent civilians and their disastrous consequences on civilians, and the unprecedented waves of displacement in the region.

US State Department reaffirmed the US’s support for the Syrian opposition and the Turkish position on these attacks. It also stressed the need to put an end to the onslaught on Idlib as it reiterated that there is no military solution in Syria. It also stressed that Russia cannot invest in these operations to impose a military solution, adding that the Russians should give up the illusion of achieving military victory.

The US State Department asserted that the United States will not lift the sanctions on the regime until it complies with UN Security Council resolutions, especially resolution 2254 and engages seriously in the political process.

The political committee also discussed the progress of the international diplomatic campaign that the Coalition launched earlier this week. The Coalition sent delegations to European capitals and the United Nations with the aim of urging action by the international community to put an end to the Russian and Assad regime’s onslaught on Idlib and rural Aleppo, establish a ceasefire, ensure protection for civilians, step up humanitarian aid and the delivery of relief aid to the displaced people.

Moreover, the committee discussed the catastrophic humanitarian conditions facing the people being displaced from Idlib and rural Aleppo. It also discussed the immense suffering Syrian refugees in the Lebanese town of Arsal are going through as a result of the snowstorm that has swept across the region. It also discussed the situation on the ground and the military operations in Syria’s northwest and attempts by the Syrian National Army to fend off the Assad regime and Russia’s assault on the region.
