Hakim Urges UN Security Council to Intervene to Enforce UNSC Resolution 2401 in Eastern Ghouta
The Syrian Coalition’s Secretary-General Nazir al-Hakim stressed the need for the UN Security Council to follow up on the implementation of resolution 2401 and put an end to the daily killings of Syrian civilians by the Assad regime and Russian air forces as well as ensure the immediate delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need.
Hakim on Friday stressed that the UN Security Council should not accept Russia's manipulation of international resolutions and the use of them as a cover to commit more war crimes against civilians in eastern Ghouta.
Hakim pointed out that the UN Security Council resolution 2401 was clear in its calls for 30-day cessation of all military operations and the delivery of humanitarian assistance to civilians and not forcing them out of their homes.
In a new report released on Wednesday, the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that the Assad regime forces killed 83 civilians, including 18 children and 13 women across Syria during the first 72 hours following the UN Security Council’s adoption of resolution 2401 calling for 30-day ceasefire in Syria last Saturday.
The situation in eastern Ghouta was worsening, said Mark Lowcock, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, presenting the Secretary-General’s latest report on Wednesday.
“Assistance across conflict lines to millions of people in hard-to-reach and besieged areas has in recent months totally collapsed,” Lowcock said. “Unless this changes, we will soon see even more people dying from starvation and disease than from the bombing and shelling.” (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
