A delegation from the opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) and head of the Syrian Coalition’s foreign mission in Washington Najeeb Ghadbian met with Syrian civil society activists in New York to discuss the important role of civil society organizations in building the future of Syria after the departure of the Assad regime.
Participants in the meeting also discussed the role of Syrian civil society groups as well as the interactive and complementary relationship between these groups and the Syrian opposition institutions.
HNC General Coordinator Riad Hijab stressed the important role of civil society in the Syrian revolution and in building the future of Syria after the departure of the Assad regime as well as in building a democratic, civil society based on the rule of law, equality and justice.
Hijab reaffirmed the HNC’s commitment to a political solution in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012 and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He stressed that the HNC will remain guided by the aspirations of the Syrian people and their yearning for freedom.” He went on to say that achieving these aspirations will require the departure of Bashar Assad and all those who are complicit in the shedding of the blood of the Syrian people.”
For their part, civil society activists emphasized the need for cooperation between civil society institutions and political forces to build a pluralistic, democratic society in Syria.
A delegation from the HNC and the Syrian Coalition is currently in the United States to meet with world leaders and officials on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.
