The Kurdish National Council (KNC) confirmed that it has been invited to the upcoming round of Geneva negotiations, adding that it has representatives within the opposition’s negotiating delegation to Geneva.
The KNC statement was made in response to the UN envoy Staffan de Mistura’s remarks that the Kurds were not invited to Geneva talks. The KNC explained that the Democratic Union Party (PYD) was not invited to the peace talks, but the Kurds were. It slammed the UN’s reducing a whole ethnic group to a single organization, namely the PYD.
The KNC’s representative of foreign relations Simand Hajjo called upon the United Nations to recognize the KNC as the representatives of the Kurds in Geneva talks and its contribution to finding a political solution in Syria.
The Council reiterated demands to remove Assad from power and to begin open discussions about the constitution of future Syria. It stressed that the new constitution must ensure social justice, democratic participation, human rights, and Syria’s unity. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
