Maktabi Criticizes UN Role in Agreements Leading to Displacement of Syrians

Secretary-General of the Syrian Coalition Mohammed Yahya Maktabi criticized the United Nations’ aiding of Assad in forcing Syrians from their homes and towns by playing the role of the mediator in local agreements. Maktabi said the Assad regime imposes those agreements by force of arms on the inhabitants of the besieged areas, which are starved and constantly bombarded.

In a televised speech yesterday, Maktabi said that “the United Nations and the international community have to stop all of Assad’s terrorist crimes against the Syrian people; to enforce the UN resolutions; and to break the regime’s siege on the liberated areas rather than assisting Assad in the displacement of Syrians from their homes.”

Maktabi said that “Assad and his allies today pursue a policy of displacement and genocide against the Syrian people, most notably in Damascus. Russia is no doubt a partner to Assad in genocide and mass forced displacements as it continues to brutally bomb civilians and the Free Syrian Army to force them to lay down their arms and leave their areas or face bombardment and death. This can be clearly seen in the town of Moadamiya in rural Damascus and many towns and districts in Damascus.”

“The crimes being committed against the Syrian people are no longer a secret to anyone. The photos coming from Zabadani, Daryya, Moadamiya, Douma, Sheikh Misqin, Azaz and Sarmada and other areas of Syria clearly reflect the size of the devastation caused by Assad and his allies. Those crimes should prompt the international community to move to save Syrians rather than issuing statements denouncing and condemning these atrocities,” Maktabi added.

Maktabi also said that “the Assad regime, backed by his Russian and Iranian allies, uses siege as weapon to subdue, starve and displace the Syrian people. This terrorist behavior has led to the death of thousands of civilians and the displacement of entire populations.”

“It is not possible to adopt an effective political approach in the light of these crimes and the devastation, which is exacerbated by the silence and inaction of the international community. This inaction has encouraged the Assad regime to commit more crimes and also served as a recruiting tool for extremist groups,” Maktabi said.

Maktabi concluded his speech praising “the infinite patience shown by Syrians, especially the FSA fighters in the town of Zabadani and in Rural Damascus in the face of the Russian and Iranian aggression, amid complete inaction by the international community.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
