President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Anas Abdah, sent a letter to European Union foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell Fontelles, to protest against the Greek army’s use of excessive force against Syrian refugees.
President Abdah called for an immediate cessation of the use of excessive force against Syrian refugees and for adopting new laws and regulations to reduce the suffering of Syrian refugees.
He also called for adopting a new strategy that respects human rights regardless of gender, belief, and background and for providing the refugees with the necessary humanitarian and legal services and protection.
Moreover, President Abdah called for engaging with all relevant parties and sides to ensure achieving and respecting ceasefire in all Syria, especially in the northwest. He also called for supporting the efforts of the political track to achieve a political transition and call upon all relevant parties to engage responsibly to reach a comprehensive political solution by fully implementing Security Council resolution 2254 (2015), which among other things will ensure fundamentally resolving the humanitarian crisis in Syria.
“The Syrian people are living one of the worst humanitarian tragedies in recent times. This has forcibly displaced more than half of the Syrian population, internally and beyond the Syrian borders, with millions staying in neighboring countries, including over 4 million in Turkey,” the letter added.
Furthermore, President Abdah pointed out that the difficult living conditions prompt Syrians to look for ways to improve their and their families’ lives as well as to move to areas where they feel they can have greater aid and other opportunities for them and their families.
He stressed that the Assad regime “bears full responsibility for the plight of the Syrian people, whether in Syria or abroad, especially those drowning during their attempt to reach Europe.” SOC’s Media Department)
