Vice-President Hisham Marwa said that the initiative Iran is proposing aims not only to keep Assad in power, but also to consolidate its project in the region.
“The Iranian initiative is primarily aimed at emptying the area that links Zabadani with the Lebanese territory to protect Hezbollah strongholds located on the common border between Syria and Lebanon. It also aims to empty Damascus’s perimeter of rebel factions thus enabling the Assad regime tightened its grip on Damascus,” Marwa added.
“The Russian position converges with that of Iran, as the two countries seek to reproduce the Assad regime and rehabilitate it in front of the international community.”
“The United States has sent positive signals before the visit of its Syria envoy Michael Rantey to Moscow, Riyadh and Geneva, when it stressed that Assad has no role in any future political transition in Syria.”
“Through its continued military support for Assad and the displacement of the local population in many areas across Syria, Iran seeks to change Syria’s demography as part of its expansionist project in the region. Besides undermining chances of reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis, Iran’s policies will further destabilize the region and fuel terrorism.” (Source: Syrian Coalition + Al-Sharq al-Awsat)
