President of the Syrian National Coalition, Anas Al-Abda, received the Director General for Syria in the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Selcuk Unal, and discussed with him the latest political and on the ground developments in Syria as well as the situation of Syrian refugees and residents in Turkey.
The Coalition’s Vice-presidents, the Secretary General, and the Coordinator of the Department of Foreign Relations also took part in the meeting. President Al-Abda stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination with the Turkish side to beat off the major challenges lying ahead, especially with regards to the Constitutional Committee and the establishment of a safe zone allowing the return of displaced persons.
The meeting included talk about the latest preparations for the work of the Constitutional Committee which will convene later this month. President Al-Abda stressed that the international community has a major role to play, especially with regard to obliging the Assad regime to comply with the rules of procedure and seriously engage in the work of the Constitutional Committee.
President Al-Abda pointed to the importance of enabling the Syrian Interim Government to improve the situation in the liberated areas, especially with regard to the improvement of security and stability as well as the holding of free, fair elections in these areas.
President Al-Abda praised the results of Operation Peace Spring as he underscored the importance of liberating the area from terrorist organizations as key to the establishment of a safe zone and the return of its people. He pointed out that the Coalition’s vision for that region is based on enabling the Syrian Interim Government to engage the local people in the management of the region.
