As the implementation of the Caesar Act that the United States approved to punish the Assad regime, hold those responsible for war crimes against the Syrian people, and release the detainees, becomes nearer, the Syrian National Coalition set up the Caesar Act Work Group to follow the implementation of the law at all levels.
Coordinator of the Syrian Coalition’s Department of Foreign Relations, Abdulahad Astepho, said that the implementation of the Caesar Act will significantly contribute to ending the nine-year-old conflict between the Syrian people and the Assad regime and bringing about a democratic transition in Syria. He pointed out that the Caesar Act will ratchet up pressure on the Assad regime and its backers.
Astepho added that the Caesar Act Work Group will work with friendly and sisterly states to activate the act and make the most of it. He noted that the act will be the major issue of its meetings with the active groups in the United States and European Union member states.
He noted that the Group will send letters and memoranda to various states regarding coordination for the implementation of the Caesar Act. The Group will also work with Syrian communities abroad to urge the European Union to issue a similar resolution so as to add further pressure on the Assad regime and its backers.
Astepho stressed that the Group will also work with Arab states to urge against the normalization of relations with it and to clarify the legal implications of doing so.
The US special envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, said earlier that the US administration will begin implementing the Caesar Act in June in order to hold accountable those involved with the Assad regime. The Act will allow holding the Assad regime accountable for the war crimes it committed in the past nine years. (Source: SNC’s Media Department)
