The Syrian Coalition said that failure to enforce UNSCR 2258 continues to embolden the Assad regime, with the backing of a UNSC member, in its use of illegal siege tactics.
Commenting today on the Assad regime’s continued use of siege tactics, the Syrian Coalition’s Representative to the Benelux and EU, Mouaffaq Nyrabia, said: “The UN Secretary General has reiterated that the use of starvation as a weapon of war constitutes a war crime.”
“On behalf of the Syrian National Coalition, I therefore urge the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria to undertake a full and thorough investigation to ensure the Assad regime is held to account,” Nyrabia added.
Nyrabia stressed that “hundreds of thousands of civilians across Syria remain under brutal siege by the Assad regime and its militias. It is absolutely critical that the international community acts to ensure unconditional humanitarian access to Madaya, Mouadamiya, Deir ez-Zor, and throughout Syria to deliver aid cross-lines, including through the use of air drops, without awaiting consent from the Assad regime.” (Source: Syrian Coalition)
