Avaaz Calls for No-Fly Zone in Syria
In the wake of the Assad regime’s chlorine gas attack on Sarmin, Avaaz launched an online petition calling for the establishment of safe havens in Syria.
“The Syrian air force just dropped chlorine gas bombs on children. Their little bodies gasped for air on hospital stretchers as medics held back tears, and watched as they suffocated to death,” the appeal said.
“But today there is a chance to stop these barrel bomb murders with a targeted No Fly Zone.
The US, Turkey, UK, France and others are right now seriously considering a safe zone in Northern Syria. Advisers close to President Obama support it, but he is worried he won’t have public support. That’s where we come in.
Let’s tell him we don’t want a world that just watches as a dictator drops chemical weapons on families in the night. We want action,” Avaaz added.
Spokesman for the Syrian Coalition Salem al-Meslet calls for holding an urgent UN Security Council meeting to enforce the UN Resolution 2118 under Chapter VII and for the referral of war criminals to the International Criminal Court.
“The murderous Assad regime has committed another crime using chemical weapons that were dropped by helicopters on civilian homes. Backed by the Iranian invaders, the Assad regime has used chemical weapons against unarmed civilians in many areas across Syria, and most recently in the town of Sarmin in rural Idlib where six people including three children, suffocated to death.”
“The international community and members of the UN Security Council bear full responsibility of the catastrophic situation in Syria as they have so far failed to end the ongoing tragedy in Syria or to hold war criminals and perpetrators of genocidal crimes to account. The UN Security Council has also failed to enforce the resolutions 2118 of 2013 concerning the use of chemical weapons, and paragraph 21 of the same resolution, which provides for the imposition of measures under Chapter VII of the UN Charter in the case of non-compliance with this resolution, including the unauthorized transfer of chemical weapons and the use of chemical weapons in Syria."
