Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said that Bashar al-Assad is behind the killing of 500,000 people in Syria, criticizing the latest remarks made by UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura on Syria.
Al-Thani said that part of the international community is now focusing only on fighting the ISIS extremist group and is no longer talking about the Assad regime.
Speaking in an interview with the Swiss newspaper Le Temps, Qatar’s top diplomat said that de Mistura cannot announce who won or who lost the war in Syria. He pointed out that Qatar and some others countries still support the Free Syrian Army (FSA).
Al-Thani stressed that his country believes that the hopes pinned on the Free Syrian Army are realistic, pointing to the existence of international commitments in this regard.
Al-Thani attributed the growing influence of Al-Nusra Front, a UN designated terrorist group, to the lack of support for the moderate Free Syrian Army groups. He stressed the need to provide “more assistance” to these groups. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
