US Ambassador to UN Calls for Ending Syria ‘Carnage’ on Revolution’s 6th Anniversary

The U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, called for ending the “carnage” in Syria, saying that the “Syrian people are suffering some of the worst forms of cruelty imaginable.”

In a statement marking the sixth anniversary of the Syrian revolution on Wednesday, Haley said that it is “shameful that this conflict has lasted this long and continues with no end in sight.”

“The United States renews its calls for a negotiated path to peace. We stand beside UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura as he facilitates dialogue to end the war, and we urge the international community to help in reaching a sustainable political settlement.”

Staff at the UN in New York also marked the sixth anniversary gathering in the Visitor's Centre Plaza for a moment’s silence during which people held up pictures of some of the child victims killed by the Assad regime and its allies.

UN Staff around the globe collectively observed a moment of silence to give a voice to those affected by the conflict and send a message to member states and world leaders to put an end to the carnage that has ravaged Syria for six years. Over 3,500 UN staffers signed a statement calling on member states, especially members of the UN Security Council, to take urgent action to stop the bloodshed in Syria.
