US: Tehran Spent Billions to Support Terrorism in Syria & Iraq

The United States said that Iran spent billions to support terrorism in Syria and other countries of the region, which has impeded the UN-led efforts to reach a political solution the Syrian conflict.

The US State Department recently published an ‎unprecedented report confirming that over the past eight years, the Iranian regime has spent some $16 billion to ‎prop up the Assad regime and support terrorist groups in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

According to the report, prepared by the special working group on Iran at the State Department, the Iranian mullahs and the Quds Force had transferred the money in ‘twisted’ ways to militias and groups fighting on its behalf in the region.

The report contains details of the destructive behavior of the Iranian regime in the region through funding and supporting terrorism, pursuing the missile program, attempts to avert sanctions, posing threats to maritime traffic and security, violations of human rights and damage to environment.

“As the Iranian people struggle, the mullah regime had squandered more than $18 billion since 2012 to support Al-Assad and his partners and agents in Syria, Iraq and Yemen,” Pompeo said in comments on his Twitter account on Tuesday.

‎“We know that Iran uses its economic revenues to ‎finance terrorism. There is no country in the world ‎that sponsors and supports terrorism more than ‎Iran,” Pompeo added. ‎

In late September, a pentagon official said that Iran’s military presence in Syria makes reaching a lasting political solution in the country increasingly unlikely. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
