Hamawi spent nearly 25 years in Tadmur Prison for his activities against the regime.
Following his release from prison in late 2004, Hamawai resumed his dissident activities, raising awareness against the injustice of the Assad regime.
Hamawi participated in the coordination of civil movement in the early days of the Syrian revolution. He was later appointed as head of the foreign relations committee of the Military Council in Hama.
He was a member of the committee that oversaw the establishment of local councils in Syria. He was elected president of the local council in the province of Hama on October 3, 2013.
Hamawi is a founding member of the Syrian National Coalition. He is also co-founder of the Syrian community administration in Turkey. He is a representative of Hama province in the Syrian Coalition.
