At least 30 civilians, including women and children, were killed in violent rocket and artillery shelling by the Assad regime and its backers on the town of Ma'aret al-Nu'man south of Idlib on Tuesday.

More than 20 rockets and artillery shells hit residential neighborhoods and public markets which are managed by an elected local council. The shelling also injured many others, including women and children.

The Assad regime's violations of the Idlib agreement and its attacks on civilian areas continue unabated. Hardly a day passes without new civilian casualties as the shelling target towns and villages covered by the agreement on a daily basis.

It is imperative that the international community take urgent action to put an end to these violations and crimes and no longer ignore the worsening situation on the ground. The Assad regime and its allies have long pursued a strategy based on exploiting any occasion to breach the agreements in place; commit more crimes; support terrorism; and shuffle the cards.

The UN Security Council and sponsors of the political solution have a responsibility to immediately intervene to save civilians; put an end to the war crimes; and enforce the resolutions on Syria, most importantly UN resolution 2254 and the Geneva Communique of 2012.
