11 Civilians Killed & 15 Injured in Airstrikes in Idlib Tuesday

July 17, 2019
in Local News

Airstrikes by the Assad regime and Russian air forces killed 11 civilians and wounded more than 15 others in Idlib province on Tuesday in yet new bloody attack in the province.

According to local activists, the victims included nine civilians who were killed and 15 others who were injured in violent airstrikes that hit the town of Ma’arashorin. The strikes also caused massive damage to shops and civilian homes.

Airstrikes also hit near the Damascus-Aleppo highway and the town of Sahiyan, killing two civilians.

Local activists also said that the Assad regime jets targeted the town of Jisr al-Shughour, injuring five civilians. More civilians were also injured in airstrikes that hit the town of Kafar Awid.

Moreover, airstrikes pounded the town of Tamana’a, injuring two men and two women. Similar attacks also targeted the town of Salihya, leaving a number of civilians wounded.

The Assad regime and Russian jets carried out at least 21 airstrikes on the towns of Jarjanaz, Hantoutin, Deir Sinbul, Ayn al-Barda, Ishtabraq, Kafarsijna, and Mouqa, without reports of casualties.

The Assad regime and Russian forces have been relentlessly bombing towns and villages in the ‘de-escalation’ zone in northwestern Syria, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians and forcing tens of thousands more out of their homes. The bombardment has also caused massive damage to infrastructure, especially hospitals and schools.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the ongoing airstrikes impacting civilians, including those on medical facilities and medical workers, in northwest Syria, his spokesman said Thursday.

“Civilians and civilian infrastructure, including medical facilities, must be protected,” said Guterres in a statement released by his spokesman. “Parties to the conflict must respect their obligations under international humanitarian law,” Guterres said, adding that those behind the attacks must be held accountable.

The Syrian Coalition said that the targeting of civilians as a “criminal act” as it stressed the need to activate the principle of accountability and transitional justice as well as to tighten the economic and legal sanctions on the Assad regime. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
