The Syrian National Coalition on Wednesday received a delegation from the Canadian Foreign Ministry and highlighted to it the extremely dire conditions civilians in northwestern Syria are going through as a result of Russia’s continued military operations in the region.
The meeting focused on the need to step up humanitarian and relief aid to those in need in Syria, especially those who were displaced from Idlib province and southwestern rural Aleppo.
The Coalition indicated that Russia and the Assad regime’s targeting of vital civilian centers such as healthcare facilities has led to the largest wave of displacement in Syria since 2011, calling for Canada to step up its efforts to evacuate people with critical injuries to safer areas for treatment.
The Coalition reasserted the responsibility of the international community to protect civilians and implement international resolutions on Syria, calling for action within the United Nations to activate the ‘Responsibility to Protect’ principle that the UN adopted in 2005.
