Press release
Syrian National Coalition – Syria
Department of Media and Communications
February 26, 2020
The Syrian National Coalition calls on the international community and the major actors to ensure immediate, effective protection for Idlib and its countryside and to work to put an end to the atrocious crimes the Russian occupation and Iranian militias are committing against the Syrian people.
The Coalition stresses the importance of supporting the Syrian National Army to enable it to protect civilians in Syria and fend off the terrorism and aggression against them as essential to creating the appropriate conditions for the resumption of the political process.
The Coalition decries the international silence towards Russia’s continued shedding of the blood of innocent civilians as well as its insistence on perpetuating chaos, violating international resolutions and understandings, and committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria.
Aerial bombardment by the Russian occupation jets and Assad regime helicopters killed 22 civilians and injured about 90 others in the past few hours. Dozens of airstrikes, shelling with heavy artillery and rockets carrying cluster munitions hit Idlib province.
In addition to civilian homes, the bombardment targeted four schools, a kindergarten, a popular market, a hospital, and a shelter for the internally displaced people.
It is imperative that the international community and the major actors reconsider their positions and options towards the current situation and as well as reassess the consequences that will ensue should this barbaric onslaught continues unchecked.
