Rights Groups Report Details Assad Regime’s Crimes in 1st Half of 2018

A rights group said that the Assad regime and its allies committed widespread crimes in Syria during the first half of 2018, recording at least 186 massacres that claimed the lives of thousands of civilians, including medical personnel. It also recorded 165 attacks on vital civilian centers.

In a new report issued on Sunday, the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) listed 122 massacres that were committed by the Assad regime forces, 24 by Russia, 15 by the international anti-ISIS coalition forces, three by the PYD militia, and 22 ones by other parties.

The massacres claimed the lives of at least 2,257 civilians, including 660 children and 479 women, the monitoring group said.

According to the report, 86 medical workers, civil defense volunteers, and volunteers with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent were killed in the period between January 1 and July 1 of 2018. The report indicated that the Assad regime forces killed 51 medical and relief aid workers, including a female worker. It said that Russian forces killed 13 humanitarians and medical works, including two female workers, while ISIS killed two doctors.

The rights group went on to say that the Kurdish Self-administration killed a civil defense volunteer and a pharmacist during the reporting period, while four medical workers were killed in bombings by the international anti-ISIS coalition. SNHR said that 14 more relief and medical workers, including two female workers, were killed in attacks that were untraceable.

The Network recorded no fewer than 165 attacks on vital civilian centers in Syria in the first half of 2018, with the Assad regime forces responsible for 91 attacks, Russian forces for 51, and each of the PYD militia and international anti-ISIS coalition forces responsible for two attacks. The Network said that 19 attacks were carried out by parties that it said it was not able to identify. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
