UN: 95,000 People Were Displaced Due to Airstrikes on Deir Ezzor Between 1-8 October

The United Nations expressed alarm “over the impact of ongoing fighting and airstrikes on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Deir ez‑Zor Governorate in Syria.” It said that as many as 95,000 people were forced to flee their homes due to the intensified fighting and aerial bombardment on the province.

“Some 95,000 men, women and children were reportedly displaced to 60 locations within the Governorate, as well as the nearby Governorates of Al-Hasakeh, Ar-Raqqa and Aleppo due to fighting,” said Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Dujarric said that about 50,000 residents in the town of Al-Mayadeen and surrounding areas are reportedly without access to health services following a string of airstrikes on the town which have rendered all hospitals and medical points in the city inoperable.

Dujarric pointed out that the international community remains concerned for the safety of over one million people in Deir Ezzor province which is being subjected to relentless airstrikes by the Russian forces and the international anti-ISIS coalition.

The Syrian Coalition earlier condemned the attacks on civilians in Deir Ezzor and the rest of Syrian cities. It called on the United Nations, the UN Human Rights Council, and leadership of the international coalition to shoulder their legal and moral responsibilities to protect innocent unarmed civilians, stressing the need to find effective measures to protect and spare civilians the impact of the conflict. Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
