UN Urges Assad to Halt Barrel Bombing of Syrians
The United Nations called on the Assad regime to stop the use of barrel bombs in its continuing four-year war on the Syrian people, attributing the high number of civilian casualties to the use of these barrel bombs.
Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said that "all evidence suggests that the indiscriminate use of barrel bombs has caused the majority of civilian casualties in Syria, quoting the UN special envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura.
Spokesman for the Syrian Coalition Salem al-Meslet stresses that "every crime carried out by Assad’s air force is a direct result of the UN Security Council’s failure to protect civilians by enforcing safe zones that could have saved tens of thousands of lives over the past four years.
“It is absolutely necessary that the international anti-ISIS coalition rethink its strategy and reform it through the inclusion of the Assad regime on its targets since it is the primary sponsor and the source of terrorism,” Meslet said. (Source: Syrian Coalition + Agencies)
