Speech by Syrian Coalition president on the military escalation in Idlib.

May 31, 2019
in Press Releases

Since the ‘de-escalation zone’ agreement took effect, the Assad regime and its allies have been breaching the agreement and violating the International Law by deliberately targeting residential areas and hospitals.

Enemies of the Syrian people have further stepped up their crimes even in the holy month of Ramadan.

They carried out at least 30 deadly attacks claiming the lives of no fewer than 250 innocent people.

The photos we are receiving are gruesome. The size of the pain which they cause is unimaginable.

The Civil Defense teams are working in extremely difficult conditions as they are being directly, deliberately and repeatedly targeted.

Since the beginning of the regime’s war against the Syrian people, medical centers and hospital have been constant targets for the regime’s killing and destruction machine, making them among the most dangerous places.

Russian bombs, the regime’s barrel bombs, the white phosphorus, the chemical weapons, the heavy artillery shelling of towns and villages as well as everything that is forbidden under the International Law is now being used against the Syrian people.

The responsibilities are clear, and the perpetrators are already known.

They are the Assad regime, Iranian militias, and Russian aggressors who have aided and abetted the regime’s crimes against the Syrian people since day one.

Russia has sabotaged all international efforts and blocked the work of the UN Security Council.

It continues to violate all laws and conventions; shows utter disregard for the work of the UN commissions; and challenges the results of the UN investigations.

Since the beginning of the direct Russian aggression on Syria, Russia has become a partner in these crimes.

It has bombed towns and villages while seeking to disrupt the political solution and support a solution based on killing and displacement.

Today I address the international community:
The blatant Russian aggression against Syrian children and women is the direct result of your inaction and your lukewarm, ineffective positions.

You will not be able to resolve crises and problems using the policy of waiting and watching idly by and the issuance of statements of condemnation.

The murderers will not decide to stop their litany of crimes on their own.

Today you have a duty to take concrete decisions to stop the killings, destruction, and displacement once and for all.

Even the international resolutions are not enough as they need to be adopted and enforced.

Indeed, they will not enter into force on their own.

Today I address the international organization and its active members.

You are the ones who need to assume the responsibility for enforcing the UN resolutions; ensuring respect for the International Law; and holding the perpetrators to account.

To persist with this reluctance and to act out of the calculation of the gains and losses is not the ideal way to stand up to the criminals.

Your current stances will only bring more destruction and killings, for which the whole world will have to pay a heavy price.

Despite the Syrians’ frustration with the international community which for the eight past years of the revolution has failed to stand in the right place and to shoulder its responsibilities with regards to the maintenance of international peace and security.

Nevertheless, it is our political duty to urge the world to shoulder its responsibilities.

We emphasize that the active states, if they have the will, can stop this barbaric onslaught and impose a political solution in accordance with the international resolutions.

Today, after it has become clear to everyone that the conventional mechanisms of the United Nations are totally incapable of preventing the killings and stopping the ongoing war crimes against civilians in Syria, we ask you to find alternative mechanisms to bring this ongoing tragedy to an end.

We ask you to overcome the obstacles in order to deter the regime and ratchet up the pressure on Russia to stop its aggression and its support for Assad.

I address the Syrian people, the Free National Army, and the revolutionary forces:

The challenges are still there and the hardships are increasing.

Since day one, our revolution has been facing a big alliance of the forces of evil in the world.

They want us to surrender and bow down to tyranny.

But we have chosen freedom.

No one can regain it alone, but united, we can achieve our goal.

We support the Free Syrian Army and the Turkish army’s efforts which have been able to deal heavy blows to terrorism.

Our Turkish brothers are still working hard to stop the bloodshed; support the political solution; save the lives of civilians; and prevent their displacement from their homes.

Today, despite all the pain and the deep sense of bitterness, and despite the deep wounds and immense hardships, our stances are firm, thanks to your sincerity and dedication.

I appeal to all the honorable people of the Arab world and the whole world to stand by what is right, by the victims of the aggression, evil and injustice against our people, and support us by all possible means.

Freedom, justice and dignity.

are what guide us.

I urge to show more patience, cooperation and unity.

Eid is approaching

as is victory, God willing.

May Allah accept your good deeds in Ramadan!

And may Allah reward you with goodness and blessings!

May our fallen heroes rest in peace, our wounded recover, and our detainees be free.

Long live Syria and its people, free and with honor.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people’s unity within the same Syrian soil
is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its
symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes
against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
