Syria and the Arab world have lost a prominent philosopher and progressive, dialectical thinker who avidly sought to leave behind a special footprint in heritage, knowledge and modernization. He also sought to reestablish a scientific, historical ground for the formulation and construction of a renaissance project for the nation and one that emanates from the nation’s very core and that is open to human civilization.
Tayyeb Tizini did not dedicate his efforts to this vital area only, but was an outspoken critic of totalitarianism, corruption, and the failed state that was established by the regime of sectarianism and tyranny. He was quick to join the Syrian revolution as he participated in the early demonstrations back in 2011 to demand the release of detainees. Although he was beaten, humiliated, and detained, he continued his efforts to bring about a radical change and pave the way for a democratic, civil state. He struggled valiantly to present his views and to search for ways of victory in the face of a myriad of obstacles and hardships, and dangers threatening the country and its geographical and societal unity.
Despite all the intimidation and attempts to silence his distinctive voice, which has considerable influence on the generations he taught in universities in Syria and elsewhere, Tizini remained true to his convictions and principles, showing modesty that is characteristic of any scholar who is aware of human values.
We pray for Tayyeb Tizini to rest in peace as we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and students.
