Commenting on recent growing anger among Assad’s support base, President of the Syrian Coalition, Hadi al-Bahra, said:
“Widespread frustration among Assad’s loyalists has always been an inevitable corollary of the regime’s brutal tactics, as well as the fact that Assad has plunged the Syrian population into a dark war, of which only him and his tight clique are the beneficiaries.
However, trapped by the vicious spiral of the regime’s violence and counter violence, and frightened by the prospect of an extremists take over, Assad’s supporters have no choice but to remain on the other side of this bloody conflict. Assad realizes that and chooses to continue to leech on the blood of his supporters.
We have seen an already disgruntled support base growing ever more angry with the regime’s indifference to the lives of soldiers, as well as with its signing off on, and highly likely bankrolling, lavish projects, among an increasingly impoverished community. In fact, the latest announcement of the opening of a new shopping mall in the coastal province of Tartous may have instigated anti-regime protests, first reported by activists on Wednesday 15th.
It is also vital to remember that Assad has reneged on all promises made to supporters. His regime has only brought death and destruction. There is a growing realization among Assad loyalists that the path towards sustainable peace and public welfare in the country begins with the removal of Assad’s despotic regime, which will allow for a transition to democracy. Only an inclusive and representative government can put an end to the conflict and secure a better future for people of all backgrounds in Syria.”
