The European Union foreign ministers will discuss the revival of the political process in Syria in a meeting in the Belgian capital, Brussels on Monday. The Assad regime and its allies continue with their attempts to derail international efforts to stop the bloodshed in Syria through continued breaches of the cease-fire agreement.
The meeting will examine developments in Syria following the discussion at the EU Foreign Affairs Council’s last meeting on December, 12, 2016 and the exchange by EU leaders at the European Council of 15 December.
The foreign ministers are expected to discuss the EU’s role in supporting a full ceasefire and a genuine political transition in Syria under the auspices of the UN, as well as in ensuring full humanitarian access and protection throughout the country.
The Syrian Coalition earlier said that preparations for the upcoming meeting in Astana should include full implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions on Syria and build on what had been reached in the Geneva negotiations of 2014 and 2016.
The Coalition stressed the need for creating the necessary conditions for the success of negotiations, including a complete halt to hostilities, lifting the sieges, the delivery of aid to those in need, the release of prisoners, and revealing the fate of those missing.
