The European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that the entire European Union “is united behind the goal of a political solution to the war, and the means to achieve it” as she stressed accountability for war crimes as key to resolving the conflict in Syria.
In a speech to the European Parliament on the EU Strategy on Syria during a plenary session of the European Parliament on Tuesday, Mogherini said the European Union “has a special role to play, to help the Syrian people end the war in their country.”
Mogherini added that the EU “committed to work for a political solution agreed among the Syrian parties as the only just but also the only realistic way to end the war.”
Meanwhile, France on Tuesday said that it had received with “concern and horror” US revelation that the Assad regime has been burning bodies of detainees in Sednaya prison, demanding the international community to “open an international investigation as soon as possible.”
Last week, Secretary-General of the Syrian Coalition Nazir Hakim called on the European Union to support the Geneva negotiations to bring about a political solution in line with the Geneva Communiqué of 2012 and the UN Security Council resolutions 2118 and 2254 calling for the establishment of a transitional governing body without Assad or his inner circle.
Head of the opposition High Negotiations Committee’s (HNC) delegation to Geneva talks Nasr Hariri stressed that time has come to hold to account perpetrators of atrocities in Syria as the Assad regime continues its war against the Syrian people, now in its seventh year.
“The world must act to stop human rights violations in Syria,” Hariri told reporters in Geneva as a fresh round of talks between the opposition and the Assad regime began on Tuesday. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department + Agencies)
