In April of 2012, the Assad regime forces committed a series of the most heinous crimes after storming many towns and villages across Syria, most of which involved summary executions of unarmed civilians with gunfire and knives.
The most bloody attacks took place in the towns of western Al-Ghariya in rural Daraa, Tal Rifaat in rural Aleppo, Deir Baalba district in Homs, Taftanaz and Orm al-Jouz in rural Idlib, and al-Lataminah in rural Hama.
Assad’s militia rounded up and massacred whole families in al-Lataminah and killed dozens more in indiscriminate gunfire and shelling on the town. The attack claimed the lives of seventy people, while thirty others were killed in the shelling that targeted the town after three days, including women and children, most of them from two families.
Perpetrators of this crime and all the rest of crimes against the Syrian people will not get away with their crimes as the punishment of the killers will inevitably come.
We reiterate the responsibility of the international community and international actors for the regime’s endless litany of war crimes, crimes against humanity, the mass forced displacement, demographic change, massive human rights violations, arrests, kidnappings, torture, rape and executions.
We renew our calls on all countries of the world to work to put an end to the ongoing crimes against the Syrian people and to prevent impunity for war criminals.
Working to refer war crimes in Syria to the International Criminal Court is of utmost importance, accompanied by international efforts to place political transition and accountability within a specific time frame to prevent the occurrence of more crimes and put an end to impunity in Syria.
