Briefing by Vice-president of the Syrian Opposition Coalition

May 31, 2021
in Press Releases

May 31, 2021

The Syrian Revolution has exposed the fundamental flaw in the international system and its mechanisms and even in its internal laws, with the presence of a state like Russia at the Security Council as the starkest example of this flaw. Russia is committing war crimes with impunity and shields a war criminal who killed well over a million civilians in Syria just because it had the right to veto.

This flaw is not limited to the UN Security Council as it can be found in some other international organizations, which further consolidates this corrupt system. We have already seen how a regime that targeted hospitals; destroyed the health sector; and detained and killed thousands of doctors and medical staff was elected to Executive Board of the World Health Organization.

More than ever, the world today is in dire need of an international system that is based on justice and ethics.

The election of a regime with a track criminal record to the Executive Board of a global organization that saves lives and works for the good of peoples is a scandal that warrants an immediate investigation

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has previously suspended the membership of the murderous Assad regime in response to its use of chemical weapons in its war against the Syrian people. Although the regime’s crimes in the medical field are no less heinous, it was elected to the WHO’s Executive Board instead of being expelled from this organization.

The Syrian people categorically rejects this dubious move. They call on the UN and the World Health Organization to launch an investigation into the legality of this move and the organization’s role in facilitating the election of the murderous regime to the WHO’s Executive Board.

It is a shame that the international community continues to accept that such a murderous regime represents a country as great as Syria. It is about time that this regime be expelled from all international organizations in preparation for its complete isolation and holding it accountable for all its crimes, especially its use of chemical weapons against civilians, a crime which has already been confirmed by the UN’s Independent Investigation Commission.

The elections farce which the Assad regime and its security apparatus have carried out are illegal and do not have any legal or political value. Having seized power in a bloody coup, the regime clings to power through the commission of crimes and by bringing in Russian and Iranian occupiers as well as sectarian militias. This is yet another crime that adds to its black record.

Furthermore, and most recently, it come up with a vulgar speech that was uttered by the war criminal Bashar at the end of his tyrannical ritual and farcical elections. He hurled a barrage of insults and vulgarities at the free Syrians who declared in Syria and to the world that he is a war criminal and that his true place must be in the court of law, not in power.

This war criminal hurled insults at the Syrian people and tried to offend them using vulgarities that must not be uttered by those who belong to a people or state as big as Syria.

The Syrian people in the liberated areas and host countries are well aware of the conditions that their fellow Syrians in the regime-held areas are living in. Those are trapped in conditions similar to those of detention under the yoke of tyranny and coercion.

We stand in awe of the chants that resonated across Syria’s south and north in defiance of the regime and its Russian and Iranian enablers to reaffirm commitment to the struggle, liberation and change.

We bow before the heroes of our country; applaud their courage; and reiterate that we will continue to do everything possible for the sake of Syria’s freedom and liberation. We will continue to resist until we are victorious.

This is Syria whose sons and daughters gave the world the first alphabet, science, knowledge and civilizations.

We extend our thanks and appreciation to the states that affirmed their rejection of this criminal farce. The Syrian people are waiting for serious steps that support their struggle for freedom and democracy and to reach a solution that guarantees political transition in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions 2118 and 2254.

At the same time, we say it as loud and clear: Whoever has been tempted to congratulate the tyrant Assad for his elections farce is proving they approve the crimes of this tyrant against the Syrian people, and support him in word and in deed. History is being written, and the people don’t forget.

We salute the thousands of Syrian activists and personalities, including thinkers, celebrities and influencers who expressed their rejection of this forgery. We urge them all to show more cooperation and to continue the struggle.

Our great Syrian people deserve to live a decent life worthy of their sacrifices and heroism. The revolution is continuing until justice is achieved by holding the criminal and his aides accountable, and until transitioning the country towards a new free, civil and democratic Syria.

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
