The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) laments the UN World Food Program’s decision to cut its food assistance for thousands of Syrian refugees living in Jordan. The decision will have serious consequences on the refugees’ lives, health, social and psychological wellbeing, let alone its negative consequences for education and job opportunities.
The decision must be reconsidered as it will undoubtedly have catastrophic consequences for thousands of Syrian refugees. Necessary measures must be taken to ensure that all Syrian refugees in Jordan receive sufficient food, medicine, and cash assistance.
The SOC calls on international actors and donors to honor their obligations towards Syrian refugees in order to prevent further deterioration of their humanitarian situation in neighboring countries, especially in Jordan. It commends the continuous efforts of the sisterly Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to protect Syrian civilians fleeing the brutality of the Assad regime and its backers and to alleviate their suffering.
It is imperative to stop dividing the Syrian crisis into separate issues and crises as if they are not related to one another, or as results of various reasons. The international community is required to focus on the root cause of all these crises, namely the Assad regime, its allied militias, and the occupying forces that it brought to Syria.
The major international parties are also required to make an effective, serious effort that puts all these crises in their proper context. They also need to do whatever is necessary to impose a political transition in accordance with UN Resolution 2254 as the gateway to solving all the crises that threaten the Syrian people at home and abroad.
