The United States reiterated its warnings to the Assad regime that it will not tolerate the use of chemical weapons, stressing that those responsible for their use must be held accountable.
In a statement issued on Monday to mark the fourth anniversary of the Assad regime’s chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta, the United States said that “Assad has not relented his reign of terror and has continued to use chemical weapons in his attacks against his own people.”
“In response to Assad’s brutality, the international community undertook considerable steps to dismantle the regime’s chemical weapons program with the determination to prevent Assad from ever using such atrocious weapons again,” the statement added.
“The world was horrified when, on April 4, Syrian aircraft dropped sarin gas on the town of Khan Sheikhoun, killing as many as 100 people and injuring hundreds more, many of them children.”
The statement added that “the international community must work together to ensure that chemical weapons use does not continue and that the victims of chemical weapons attacks will not be forgotten.”
Four years ago today, the Assad regime murdered more than 1,400 Syrian civilians using the chemical agent sarin in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta.
Syrian protestors on Monday commemorated the fourth anniversary of the Ghouta massacre in many towns and villages across Syria.
Syrian activists organized dozens of demonstrations and sit-in across Syria and in the diaspora, holding placards that called for brining Bashar al-Assad to justıce for being behind the orders that led to the death of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians.
The Syrian Coalition called upon the UN Security Council and the international community to assume their responsibilities to hold accountable hose responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria and all other crimes against civilians.
