Widespread Support for Military Strikes Against Assad Regime in Syria

The military strikes that were launched at dawn on Saturday against military positions of the Assad regime and its allied terrorist militias have received widespread international support. The strikes were seen as “the appropriate response to war crimes against civilians.”

The European Union, NATO, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar voiced support for the missile strikes. Turkish Foreign Ministry said the strikes “carried out early this morning by the United States, United Kingdom and France to be an appropriate response to the chemical attack which caused the deaths of many civilians in Douma on 7 April.”

“We welcome this operation which has eased humanity’s conscience in the face of the attack in Douma, largely suspected to have been carried out by the regime,” a press release by the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

The Ministry stressed that “attacks with weapons of mass destruction, including chemical weapons, that indiscriminately target civilians constitute crimes against humanity.”

The targets that were hit by the strikes included several military positions and facilities in and around the capital Damascus as well as in central Syria. Anadolu news agency said that the strikes targeted the Dumayr airbase northeast of Damascus, Syrian Scientific Research Centers in Barza and Jamraya, Mazzah airbase, and the 41st Special Forces Brigade in Damascus.

Anadolu agency added that the strikes also hit military positions on Qassioun Mountain, the vicinity of Damascus International Airport as well as military bases in Ruhaiba and Kiswa in rural Damascus.

The targets also included a military warehouse in the Danha area west of Homs, Hama airbase as well as positions of the Iranian-backed militias near the town of Izraa north of Dara’a. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
