The European Union said that the Belgian capital, Brussels, would host an international conference on supporting Syria’s future and stabilization on April 24-25. The move came fallowing international calls to reinvigorate the Geneva political process aimed at reaching a full political transition.
The conference will bring together participants from more than 85 countries and organizations at ministerial level to discuss all key aspects of the Syria crisis, including political, humanitarian and regional dimensions, according to information issued by the EU.
The conference will seek to maintain international engagement in delivering assistance to the Syrian people and host communities, in addition to providing an opportunity to discuss the political situation in the war-torn nation on a global level, said the bloc in an announcement on Sunday.
The EU reaffirmed that only a political solution will ensure lasting stability in Syria, through the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Syria as well as the UN-led process to achieve an intra-Syrian political solution.
Last week, Western countries called for the relaunch of the political process in Syria, which stalled because of the Assad regime’s refusal to abide by international resolutions demanding a ceasefire, improvement of the humanitarian conditions, and the formation of a Transitional Governing Body (TGB) with full executive powers, including powers of the president.
The Syrian Coalition stressed starting the importance of initiating the process of political transition in accordance with the Geneva Communiqué of 2012 and UN Security Council resolutions 2118 and 2254 under the auspices of the United Nations.
The Coalition stressed the need to hold accountable all perpetrators of war crimes in Syria, chiefly among them are Bashar al-Assad and his clique who are responsible for the most heinous crimes against Syrian civilians, such as mass killings, intimidation, starvation, and arbitrary detention.
