Anti-regime demonstrators gathered in Karama Square in the city of Suwayda on Monday to participate in a peaceful demonstration demanding political change, the departure of the Assad regime, and the implementation of UN Resolution 2254.
Demonstrators raised banners expressing solidarity with Gaza, some of which read, “With Gaza, its people, and all of Palestine. The absence of international resolutions creates war, and the absence of justice creates a dictatorship. They tried to bury us, but they did not know that we are seeds. Karama Square is the voice of truth in our hearts. Our noise and anger today are the calm and peace of tomorrow.”
On Sunday, demonstrators paid tribute to Syrian actor Mashhour Khaizuran, who hailed from Suwayda province and passed away on Sunday at the age of 77. Demonstrators chanted a phrase that the late Khaizuran had used during an anti-regime protest, describing Assad as the “president of a thuggish regime.”
Two weeks ago, during an anti-regime demonstration in his hometown village of Hout, the late Khaizuran recited a poem in which he affirmed his support for popular demands calling for political change and called for the demonstrations to continue until the demands are met.
