A new UN report on Syrian children indicated that 910 children were killed and 361 others injured last year, blaming the Assad regime and its allies for most of the crimes and violations against children in Syria.
An annual UN report noted an increase in the number of children affected by the fighting in their countries. The UN said it had documented more than 21,000 violations of children’s rights around the world in 2017, noting that this increase is unacceptable compared to 2016.
According to the report, the recruitment of children in Syria rose by 13 percent compared to 2016, stressing that children in Syria suffered the most in the Arab countries during 2017.
Syria ranked high in terms of the recorded number of violations and abuses against children, followed by Yemen, Myanmar, South Sudan and other African countries.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) earlier said that over 27,000 children were killed in Syria between March 2011 and March 2018, noting that the overwhelming majority of those were killed by in attacks by the Assad regime and its allies.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that boys and girls have been overly affected by prolonged and new violent crises. He noted that despite some progress, the level of violations remained unacceptable.
Guterres called for the protection of children in line with international humanitarian law and human rights law. He also called on all parties to engage with the United Nations to develop concrete measures to put an end to end and prevent grave violations against children as well as provide support and relief to affected children.
