Abdul Majid Barakat, Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), welcomed German statements reaffirming commitment to refusing to normalize relations with the Assad regime. He stated that this aligns with Germany’s supportive stance towards the Syrian people’s pursuit of freedom, dignity, and democratic transition.
In a press statement, Barakat expressed hope that the European Union would not follow the misguided policies of some of its member states. He emphasized that implementing UN resolutions related to Syria, particularly Resolutions 2118 and 2254, is essential to ending the suffering of the Syrian people and resolving other issues, especially the ongoing waves of refugees.
Barakat noted that the primary desire of Syrians now is to flee Syria in search of safety and a better future for their children. He added that this situation reflects the country’s dire state due to the terrorism practiced by the Assad regime. Barakat expressed astonishment at some countries’ attempts to reconsider their policies towards the regime or view it as a guarantor of resolving the refugee crisis.
