The free Syrian mission won two bronze medals at the Muay Thai World Championship held in the Turkish city of Antalya over the past three days, with the free Syrian champions taking the podium on Sunday at the end of the tournament.
Sariya al-Jazayiri won the bronze medal in the 60 kg category while Mohamed Haj Yassin came at the same place in the 93 kg category.
Sariya said he was dedicating the medal to his family, the Syrian people, and to all detainees in the prisons of the Assad regime, especially Rania Abbasi and her family.
Yasin also said he was dedicating the medal to all detainees who were detained for taking part in the revolution. “What matters to us is that we were able to dedicate this achievement to the Syrian people who are suffering and who have been demanding freedom for over the past several years.”
“Winning two medals on behalf of the Syrian team and the Arabs was not easy as we competed against very well prepared, powerful teams.”
Among all the Arab participants, only Sariya and Yasin bragged medals in the tournament.
The Syrian national Muay Thai team arrived at the Turkish city of Antalya on Wednesday to participate in the Muay Thai World Cup. Muay Thai or Thai boxing is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. Invented in the 16th century, the sport is now practiced all over the world.
Athletes of the Syrian Free Karate Team have already won four silver medals and three bronze medals at the Eindhoven International Karate Open which saw the participation of 14 Asian and European countries.
