The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Wednesday condemned US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
In a press statement adopted by members of the 140th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting in the Qatari capital Doha, the Union condemned the “extension of the authority of any party to the territory of others through the use of hostile acts.”
“The US recognition of the Golan Heights runs counter to U.N. Security Council resolution 497,” said IPU President Gabriela Cuevas.
U.N. Security Council resolution 497 “discourages strongly any attempt by Israel to “impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights” and considers such attempts as “null and void and without international legal effect,” Cuevas added.
“On behalf of the IPU, I launch a strong appeal for all parties to the conflict in the Middle East to refrain from any unilateral action that would fan the flames of conflict. We, as parliaments or parliamentarians, should resolve to work ever more robustly to contribute to peace through genuine dialogue.”
The Syrian Coalition earlier said that the attempts by US President Donald Trump to grant legitimacy to the Israeli occupation of the Golan Heights “constitutes a violation of international law and consolidation of the law of the jungle.”
The IPU concluded its five-day session in Doha with the participation of 2,200 individuals from more than 160 countries. Founded in 1889 by Frederick Bass (France) and William Randall Kramer (Britain), the IPU is an international organization that brings together the parliaments of 178 countries.
