The Syrian Civil Defense said that four civilians, including a child, were killed and three others were wounded as a result of barrel bomb attacks and rocket shelling by the Assad regime on the surroundings of the town of Tamana’a in southern rural Idlib on Wednesday.
Local activists said that the Assad regime’s helicopters barrel bombed the center of the town of Tamana’a in the early morning hours of Wednesday, targeting residential areas. The Syrian Coalition said that these attacks are continuation of the long series of the Assad regime’s war crimes and crimes against humanity, reiterating calls on the UN Security Council to take concrete steps to protect Syrian civilians.
The Assad regime and Russia’s escalation of bombardment of rural areas of Hama and Idlib province have prompted an exodus of civilians from these areas over the past five days.
The civil defense teams said they had responded to 68 attacks in the last five days. They said that the shelling killed no fewer than 121 people, including 45 children and 28 women. They added that the majority of the victims were pulled from under the rubble in Idlib during the first half of August.
The First Response Coordination Team in northern Syria said that around 80 percent of the residents of eight villages in rural Idlib have been displaced by the intensifying bombardment. The villages are Um Jalal, Um al-Khalakhil, Al-Farajah, Al-Khawain, Tal Al-Sheikh, Sihal, Al-Barisah and Al-Raffa.
The team on Tuesday issued an appeal to the international community as well as political organizations and bodies to urgently work on stopping military operations in the areas that are covered by the ‘de-escalation zones’ agreement.
The group noted that the displaced had fled to relatively safer areas in Idlib province, adding that Syria’s north had become overcrowded and that it can handle no more exodus of civilians. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
