Douma Local Council Calls on Int’l Community to Intervene to Stop Genocide in Eastern Ghouta

The local council in the district of Douma on Tuesday called on the international community to intervene urgently to stop the “genocidal campaign” being carried out by the Assad regime and its allies in the towns and villages of eastern Ghouta in Rural Damascus.

In statement released on Tuesday, the council said that the Assad regime has stepped up the onslaught on eastern Ghouta, especially after remarks by the Russian foreign minister who threatened eastern Ghouta with a fate similar to that of Aleppo.

"Eastern Ghouta is witnessing an unprecedented military escalation by the Assad regime and its allies who are using internationally prohibited weapons in the onslaught on the area. We therefore call on the United Nations, the international community, and the UN Security Council to shoulder their legal, moral and humanitarian responsibilities and to put an end to this genocidal campaign," the statement said.

Member of the Syrian Coalition’s political committee Safwan Jandali on Tuesday called on the international community to take “more effective and urgent measures to force the Assad regime to stop its crimes."

Jandali said that "the positions and statements recently issued by European and UN officials in response to the recent developments in eastern will fall short of stopping the killing of innocent civilians or deterring the murderous Assad regime. He described these statements are of limited impact and does not correspond to the level of bloodshed in eastern Ghouta.

Dozens of people demonstrated in the towns of Maarat al-Nu'man and Sarqib in Idlib province to show solidarity with residents of the Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta whose suffering has considerably worsened due to the military escalation by the Assad regime and Russian forces.

Protesters marched in the streets of the two towns, raising flag of the Syrian revolution and chanting slogans in support of eastern Ghouta. They called on the Free Syrian Army groups unite as they demanded the departure of Bashar al-Assad. (Source: Syrian Coalition’s Media Department)
